De l'Avui d'avui, en la veu del novel·lista australià Peter Carey, dues vegades Booker Prize, parlant sobre el seu país: "Som una petita cultura que sempre cerca que anglesos i nord-americans ens diguin què està bé i què no. La cultura dels Estats Units també és jove, però és més forta. Nosaltres no tenim autoconfiança; mentre que ells creuen en l'èxit, la nostra experiència és el fracàs; ells van escollir Amèrica, a nosaltres ens van enviar a Austràlia... Els australians esperem el fracàs, fins i tot quan arribem a tenir èxit."

O aquesta altra sobre la síndrome de la flor massa alta i la manera de celebrar els èxits, en una entrevista a Powells.com: "There are millions of small examples of that sort of thing. There's a really common thing called a tall poppy syndrome, which is something that happens in many countries in different ways. Basically, the tall poppy syndrome is that if you have a field of poppies and one poppy gets taller than the rest, the head gets chopped off. And that's how we generally celebrate success in Australia. You know, it's fine for a minute and then - boom."
